Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Trades and guided by the Senior Training and Employment Coach, the Training & Employment Coach provides support to urban Indigenous trainees enrolled in the Indigenous Skills for Success (IS4S) program and apprentice technical foundation training. The role ensures trainees receive the guidance needed to successfully complete skills upgrading and technical training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review client applications referred by Employment Advisors
  • Identify potential barriers to success during the interview process
  • Participate in applicant interviews using a structured set of questions designed to evaluate suitability based on criteria established by the Trades Department and training providers
  • Monitor client academic and personal progress throughout the 8‑week Indigenous Skills for Success (IS4S) program by conducting regular check‑ins and communicating with IS4S staff regarding attendance, progress, and any emerging challenges
  • Ensure clients receive necessary supplies, including laptops, calculators, boots, and other materials, accurately and on time
  • Provide one‑on‑one support and mentoring during technical training, maintaining supportive yet professional relationships with trainees
  • Identify client needs related to rehabilitation, financial assistance, tutoring, or additional support, and make timely referrals to appropriate services
  • Assist trainees with employment preparation at program completion, including resume and cover‑letter development and interview preparation
  • Collaborate with the Apprenticeship Advisor on job search and job placement activities, including connecting clients with employer partners and sharing new employment leads as they arise
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Trades partners, training institutions, employers, contractors and other industry stakeholders
  • Keep the Trades Admin and Employment Advisor informed completion and employment results
  • Demonstrate willingness to complete training in resume writing, databases, and other professional skill area as required
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • Journeyperson Certification and/or relevant construction experience, with a strong working knowledge of the skilled trades
  • Counselling, teaching or mentoring experience is considered a strong asset
  • Understanding of the apprenticeship system in BC (Skilled Trades BC) is required
  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities is considered an asset, along with a demonstrated ability to build respectful, culturally informed relationships

  • Exceptional interpersonal and coaching abilities, including good listening skills, the capacity to meet individuals where they are, and the ability to provide supportive, solution‑focused coaching
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written communication skills for professional messaging, correspondence, and report writing
  • Demonstrated competency in using Microsoft Office applications, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new systems as required.
  • Accurately update trainee information in each client’s apprenticeship database, including training progress and employment outcomes.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date program records in shared drive summaries, including trainee lists, completion data, and employment outcomes for Director reporting.
  • Prepare regular and ad‑hoc reports as requested by the Director and program funders
  • Experienced and confident in developing and delivering engaging presentations to diverse audiences
  • Valid driver’s license with a clear drivers abstract and reliable vehicle
  • Ability to pass a vulnerable sector criminal background check
